The Magic Glasses is an unconventional picture book by Petra Finy, a versatile and fruitful author successful in many genres of children’s literature – from Swedish style children’s poems to fantasy novels. Illustrated by László Herbst, The Magic Glasses is a tale of the Hungarian capital, Budapest. The protagonist is a little boy called Aron Smith Little, who receives his glasses at the age of five. One day he discovers his glasses are no ordinary glasses but miracle-glasses. Petra Finy’s tale offers children some everyday wisdom about the objects of our surroundings meaning nothing in themselves, but gaining their meaning by our perception; and tells them that if we can see the world in a humorous way we do not only become happier, but richer also – at least with a few tales. László Herbszt gives a new dimension to the words with his illustrations rich in staggering ideas and graphical puns, shedding a new and still familiar light on this shabby but still loveable city, Budapest.
