Cube House, Szeged
The client wanted a basic, but special house, which is not provocative, but at the same time stands out of its surroundings. The first cube in the street-front of the house gives place to the garage. In the next big cube, farther away from the traffic noises, the living spaces are created: “community” spaces on the ground floor, the first floor gives rooms to the intimate zones, while the third cube is formed to act as a living room. The resulting structure fully fills in the cubic capacity of the building. An exciting building is reached by moving the cubes, instead of placing them side by side of each other; an extra experience is gained by the play of the windows. The construction and building materials were defined to support low energy usage. The building generates and forms a closed mass on the eastern side (street front), but opens up to the south and to the west letting more sunshine in the living area.An elegant building was born, free from all kinds of frills and fully capable for a balanced and liveable family home.I believe that a building with a simple geometry is much more resistant to time, just think of our childhood’s good old building block games.
